Born to an expatriot family on January 12th, 1856, John Singer-Sargent's father intitally had marked him for a career in the military. The more artistically-inclined Sargent managed to find a patronage with Emile Auguste Carolus Duran, which kept him out of the army and launchd his career. Following in the footsteps of his parents, American native Sargent lived abroad most of his life, spending a great deal of time in France, then the art capital of the world. He was a rising young star when the infameous "Portrait of Madame X" caused a scandal on its display at the 1884 Paris Salon. It branded the unfortunate subject - society mavenMadame Virginie "Amelie" Gautreau - an uncouth woman, and Sargent was called depraved and worse - all of this due simply to a fallen shoulder strap on "Madame X's" dress. The scandal was so great that Gautreau's reputation was permanently ruined, and Sargent was forced to leave Paris for London, where he set up permanent residence. Sargent went on to recover his reputaion by creating the innocent "Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose", which was displayed favorably at the 1887 Salon. Sargent was suddenly once more the toast of the art world, and was eventually called on to paint such luminaries as Theodore Rooseveldt, Robert Louis Stevenson, and various wealthy society people and their children. Sargent soon grew bored with such work, and took on more exciting duties such as mural work for the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and became an official portraitest for England during World War I. He died of a a heart attack while working on the Musem of Fine Arts mural in his studio in his adopted England on April 14th, 1925.
