A B O U T

Rose Lindstrom Nylund was a fictional character featured on the popular sitcom, The Golden Girls. She was portrayed by Betty White.

Rose was one of the four major characters on the show, and classified as "the dumb one" - Betty White contends that Rose isn't actually dumb, but hopelessly naieve. Rose is known for her rambling, nonsensical stories about her hometown, St. Olaf, Minnesota, that her roommates endured with exasperated silence (or muttered insults). Rose, however, never realized how torturous her stories were for her friends, and continued to whip them out whenever the occasion called for it (or didn't, which was usually the case). Rose exasperated Dorothy and Blanche, which led to their usual refrain of "Oh, shut up, Rose" or hitting her on the head with magazines.

Rose also had the sunniest disposition of the four, and very rarely got angry or upset (with the notable exception of her intensely competitive nature, especially in sporting events). She was generous and kind, but extremely naive. She was also a great lover of animals, having been raised on a dairy farm, and frequently tries to foster lost dogs over Blanche and Dorothy's protests.

Rose was widowed at the start of the series, having lost her husband (and childhood sweetheart), Charlie. They were married for 32 years. He died while they were having sex, which caused her to have a phobia about 'killing men' in bed. She soon overcame this fear and began dating, eventually meeting the man who would become her first serious boyfriend, professor Miles Webber (Harold Gould) - who was eventually revealed to be Nicky Ernstien, accountant for the Mob.

At the beginning of the series, Rose worked as a counselor at a grief center, then took a job as a waitress at a coffee shop after the center closed. In the later seasons, Rose became a research assistant for a TV news station, and then a segment producer for Enrique Mas.

Rose and Charlie had five children, Kirsten, Brigid, Janella, Adam and Charlie, Jr. She also had a granddaughter, Charley (born to Kirsten). She is also one of nine children, having been adopted by Alma and Gunter Lindstrom as a baby. She has a blind older sister named Lily (Polly Holliday), and a younger sister named Holly (Inga Swenson), whom she doesn't get along with. While volunteering at a hospital, Rose accidentally met her birth father, a monk named Brother Martin (Don Ameche) who'd fallen in love with her birth mother, a teenaged Ingrid Kerklavaner, over half a century before. By the time he'd learned of Rose's birth, Rose had already been adopted (her mother had died in childbirth). He asked for Rose's forgiveness, and she gave it happily. However, like most pivotal guest characters in the show, he is never seen or mentioned again.

Rose was also noted for having several health problems during the show: she once overworked herself and suffered a physical breakdown, and later on she had a minor HIV scare due to a mistaken blood transfusion that occurred several years prior. Near the end of the series, Rose has a heart attack and undergoes a triple bypass. Despite the relatively serious tone of the issues that each of these incidents address, they are, of course, treated with a somewhat light-hearted air, being a sitcom.

Rose, along with Blanche and Sophia, leave Blanche's familiar home to work at the Golden Palace Hotel after Dorothy remarries and leaves the series in the spin-off "The Golden Palace". There she ends up breaking up with Miles, who turns out to have been cheating on her. -wikipedia.com
