The most popular telling of the myth speaks of Orpheus and Eurydice, a young harpist and son of Apollo and Caliope and his bride, the fair Eurydice. Unfortunately, the omens for the marriage were not good. Very shortly after the wedding, the bride is bitten by a snake and dies. A grief-striken Orpheus chooses to bribe Charon to ford him accross the River Styx, travel to the underground and win back his bride from Hades. Orpheus brought to tears the many inabitants of the underworld with his love song, and thus won his court with Persephone and Hades, for whom he plays such a sad song that great tears roll down the God's cheeks. Orpheus is granted his bride back, on the condition that he not gaze upon her until she reaches the living world - otherwise, she will belong to the underground forever. Orpheus and Eurydice nearly make it back to the world of the living, but he does look back at Eurydice (in some tellings, to make sure she's all right), and she becomes forevermore the subject of Hades in the underworld. Orpheus is left alone to mourn his bride, which he does to such a level that he either starves himself to death or is torn to pieces by the jealous Thracian maidens. Thus he and Eurydice are happily reunited forevermore in the afterlife.
