A B O U T

General: Muriel's Wedding is a 1994 Australian film written and directed by P. J. Hogan. Hogan, whose screenplay incorporated a number of events in his own life, cast then-relatively unknowns Toni Collette (who gained 40 pounds for the role) and Rachel Griffiths as the leads. Collette received a Golden Globe Award nomination as Best Actress, and Griffiths won both the Australian Film Critics Award and the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Supporting Actress. The worldwide success of the film was instrumental in propelling the careers of the director and his stars.

Summary: A socially awkward "ugly duckling" obsessed with the music of ABBA, Muriel Heslop is a native of Porpoise Spit, Australia, the target of criticism by "more modern" and downright snobby girls she thought were her friends. She loves attending weddings, and these girlfriends consider her a burden on their new, married lives. After she's arrested for shoplifting while wrestling for a bridal boquet, she becomes fed up with being an onlooker and with her psychologically abusive father and downtrodden family and decides to take some action: she accepts a blank check from her mother that's supposed to start her off on a career selling makeup, and cashes it in for her parents' life savings.

Flush with mad money, she goes on a tropical vacation, where she meets up with old friend Rhonda, whose promiscuous and free-spirited life prove an inspiration. Driven by the mischevious support of her new friend, Muriel leaves her family and hightails it to Sydney to avoid the shame of possible jail time. There, Muriel renews her acquaintance with the vivacious Rhonda, moves in with her, changes her name to Mariel, and gets a job at a video store and begins to date. "Mariel" is still obsessed with marrying, howver, and spends every afternoon in bridal shops taking pictures of herself in wedding gowns. When tragedy strikes Rhonda both women are forced to reevaluate their independence. Rhonda discovers Muriel's obsessive secret and the two fight, with Muriel turning herself in to her family and returning to Porpoise Spit as the end result. Her father agrees not to press charges if she'll marry a swimming champion and prospective gold medalist whose connections will advance his political standings.

Muriel finally has the wedding of her dreams - without her best friend or her mother (the people who truly love her) in attendance. As the glow of the ceremony wears off, Muriel finds herself replaying tapes of the event over and over again to relive the high of the moment, much as she did with the Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer wedding back at the Sydney video store. She comes to realize her loveless marriage was not worth the momentary high of the wedding, but it takes another tragedy to make Muriel shake off the torpor of her existance and make a clean break with the past.
