A B O U T

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 is a well-known series (which aired from 1988-2004 on Comedy Central and the Sci Fi channel) which portrayed the exploits of a man and five robots trapped in space as part of an experiment in bad movie watching.

CHARACTERS:

ON THE SOL:

Joel Robinson: Sleepy-eyed janitor for Gizmonics Institute, Joel was the first subject of Doctor Forrester's experiment. He created Gypsy, Cambot, Crow and Tom from spare parts from his ship (The parts that tell him when the movies will begin or end), and prides himself on being quite an inventor. Fatherly Joel will gladly battle tooth-and-nail to protect his charges. In the Season 5 episode "Mitchell," Joel leaves the satellite in an escape pod found in a box of Hamdingers. After crash-landing in Australia and doing pyrotechnics for "Man Or Astroman?", Joel ends up a manager of a Hot Fish Shop in Osseo, Minnesota.

Mike Nelson: A temp worker kidnapped and launched into space by Doctor Forrester, Mike is a grouchier, more sarcastic figure in the scheme of the show's make-up. He had once dreamed of being a rock star while working at a deli counter before his status as a temp worker led him to his fate. While Joel seemed to tolerate his captivity with good humor, Mike wants back down to Earth in the worst way. He eventually gets his wish when the SOL crash-lands on Earth and he and the bots get an appartment in Wisconsin.

Tom Servo: Tom's the short red guy with the body of a gumball machine. He's got a booming but lovely singing voice. A tad pompous, Tom's sense of superiority gets him in trouble, since conflict often makes him cry. Collects Carter 2-T underpants. Lives with Mike and Crow in a ground-level appartment.

Crow T. Robot: the skinny, tall gold guy. Crow sees himself as an artist and tries (with little to no sucessful results) for a screenwriting and songwriting careeer. He has a major thing for Kim Cattrall and and has an evil black-cloaked twin named Timmy. Lives with Tom and Mike in Minnesota.

Gypsy: The big purple female robot. Gypsy was originally introduced as being cowlike and slow. In Season 2's The Wild Rebels, it was revealed that this was because Gypsy was attached to the higher functions of the ship - Joel shut them down so she could become a better-functioning version of herself. She immediately became smarter. Was once used as the "umbilicus" attaching Deep 13 to the SOL. She eventually displays the most biting wit of the four robots invented by Joel. Occasional love object of Tom. When the SOL crash-lands on earth in Season 8, Gypsy is the only robot to move out on her own, and becomes a rich businesswoman.

Cambot: The robot filming everything - rarely seen. Presumably ends up living with Mike, Tom and Crow in Wisconsin.

Nanites: Little robots who appeared occasionally in season 6. Would repair the SOL at Mike's behest but often took quite a long time following his orders.

Magic Voice: Pleasent, feminine unseen voice (and robot) who announced commercial breaks and provided support for the gang. Was used sparingly on the show after season 8 when her VA, Mary Jo Pehl, took an onscreen roll as Pearl Forrester.

ON EARTH/DEEP 13/CASTLE FORRESTER:

Doctor Clayton Debra Susan Forrester: Joel and Mike's boss, member of Evilos, and head of this experiment, in which he hopes to find a movie bad enough to drive the world populus insane, allowing him to take over. Doctor Forrester is half-insane himself, but retains his intelligence. Assisted in turn by Dr. Lawrence Earnhardt, TV's Frank and his mother, Pearl. In Season 7 his funding was cut, causing him to release the SOL to its fate. He in turn reverted to the stateus of a star baby. Unfortunately, Pearl's second attempt at raising her son resulted in him turning out the exact same way - and her smothering him to death.

Dr. Lawrence Ernhardt: Forrester's assistant in season 1. Became a mad scientist while working at the zoo. He departs at the end of season 1; Dr. Forrester declares him missing, but Joel posits that he was eaten by a giant spider.

TV's Frank: A fiesty young Arby's employee, Frank was independently wealthy. Genial and niaeve, he dreamed of being best buddies with the bots and Joel (and Mike). For that and many other reasons, Forrester would repeatedly punish him harshly, killing him repeatedly, however Frank would consistantly bounce back to life. He was finally assumed into second banana heaven during season 6's Samson Versus the Vampire Women - in Season 8's Soultaker, it was revealed that he was transferred to the Soultaking division due to his dislike for second banana heaven's politics.

Pearl Forrester: Clayton's castigating mother, she was originally much closer to Frank; after being introduced in season six, Pearl took his place as a co-mad in season 7. A feminine hausfrau, she henpecked and mocked Forrester to the edge of his reason, often resulting in his trying to kill her as he had once killed Frank. After re-raising Clayton and then killing him, Pearl was frozen, then thawed out, by an apelike race of creatures a hundred years after her death. Worshipping her as the Lawgiver, they obeyed her beck and call. Pearl called Mike and the Bots back from the edge of the universe (where they had gone after being transformed into beings of pure energy at the end of season 7) and forced them to sit through further experiments as revenge for their part in Clayton's death. She escapes in her Widowmaker of Doom (A flying VW Van) with Professor BoBo just before Mike accidentally blows up BoBo's monkey homeworld. They land on a seemingly abandoned planet for fuel and bump into the omniciant Observer, who holds them all captive until Mike, once again, accidentally blows up the Observer homeworld. Observer, BoBo, and Pearl survived a trip back to ancient rome through a wormhole and another back to modern days before finally settling down at the ancestral home of the Forresters, Castle Forrester. While there, Pearl found herself having to prove herself worthy of a license in the mad sciences. Ultimately, her own recklessness was her undoing - dumping a can of Mountain Dew on Brain Guy's brain resulted in him being unable to stop Mike from crashing the SOL back to Earth. She ends up a dictator in Qatar.

Professor BoBo: An ape professor who meets Pearl after she's deforstedin his decade. Goofy and genial, he ends up her assistant back on earth. Loves to eat. Ends up becoming a specimine at a zoo.

Observer: AKA: Brain Guy: an omnipotant figure in a purple robe who carries his green brain in a pan, Observer was just one of his race when Mike blew up his planet. A vivacious social bon-vivant, he has a major rivalry with Professor BoBo.

MINOR CHARACTERS:

Minor reoccuring characters include Torgo, based on the character from the film Manos: The Hands of Fate and Mr B. Natural, from the short of the same name.
