Mad was founded by William M. Gaines, and it was orriginally launched as a parody venue for fameous comic strips and comic books. Eventually, the magazine's satire evolved to parodies of movies, TV Shows, celebrities, pop culture and social moores.

Mad has a long and colorful history of coming up against censorship from everyone from the Comics Code Authority to local church leagues. Nevertheless, the magazine persevered and thrived throughout the fifties, becoming a counterculture staple by the end of the decade. For more on the history of the Magazine, see the mag's wikipedia entry.

The best-known characters to emerge from Mad are Alfred E. Neuman, the red-headed, jug-eared, freckle-faced mascot and "What, Me Worry?" kid and the two cloak-and-dagger, black and white-clad spies who attempt to kill each other in the most inventive and bloody ways in "Spy Vs Spy". The two spies have had their own video games, tee shirts, commercials and movies, plus animated shorts on Mad TV. Alfred has had his own books, figures, dolls, computer games and tribute songs. Other familiar characters include the patient and Doctor Plotnick from the late Dave Berg's "Lighter Side" (a feature which ran from the '50's through Berg's fairly-recent death); Monroe, a teenager who's the victim of terrible luck; and Arthur the Tree. Regular features include Al Jaffe's "Mad Fold-In" (always on the inside backj cover) and the "Fundalini Pages," which mock Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide's blurb-happy news installents.

Though Gaines passed away in the early 90's, Mad continues to thrive as one of Time Waner's flagship magazines. Mad Kids was recently added to the publishing line up and is published alongside the original twice-monthly Mad Magazine and the supplamentary which reprint old articles with a few new features thrown in, Mad XL.

Due to recent cutbacks, Mad Kids was discontinued in 2008, and Mad XL folded in 09. Mad itself, instead of being published monthly, is now being published quarterly.

Mad has also spun off into a Saturday late-night SNL-style sketch show called "Mad TV" in the mid-90's. The show aired on Fox Saturdays 11 PM EST until it was cancelled in 2009.
