A B O U T

Edna and Tracy are a mother-daughter pair from Baltimore. Edna was once a size-five beauty queen - when she gained weight she cloistered herself in her appartment for over ten years and began taking laundry for a living, foregoing her dreams of owning an occidental laundromat.

Tracy, her daughter, is a peppy dynamo who loves to dance and dreams of being on the Corny Collins show. An opening allows Tracy to audition, and Edna is at first horrified by her daughter's plans, knowing that "people like them" don't end up in the spotlight. But Tracy's determination (and a little help from the smooth-dancing Seaweed J. Stubbs) wins the day, ultimately helping bring her mother out of her shell and out into the world.

Though Edna and Tracy have hit a rough patch thanks to Tracy's adolesence, by the end of the movie it's clear that they'll be close for years to come.
