Jeopardy! Is a popular game show which has existed in some version on the air since the early 1960's. Its current and most popular inception began in 1984 and has been hosted continuously from its inception by the same man, Alex Trebek. It has won a total of 27 Daytime Emmys, a record. It has since become a pop culture staple, popping up in music, various television shows and even as a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live.

CONCEPT: The game is played by three participants and lasts for three rounds. Each contestand is equipped with a buzzer. A toin is cossed backstage, and the winner of that toss is given the option of picking one of five question from six catagories, usually ranging in sum from $200 to $1,000 in the first, or Jeopardy! round. The clue is given by Trebek - the answer. All three contestants are given the oportunity to buzz in and give the question that best matches the answer. If the answer isn't given in the form of a question, proves incorrect, or cannot answer within the official five seconds alotted, a sum matching the worth of the catagory is deducted from the player's total. One of the clues has a hidden Daily Double bonus attached to it - the person who picks that clue will be asked to wager a maximum of $1,000 (or a minimum of $5). The sum is deducted or added to the total of the contestant based upon their answer.

There are variations to clues: Some will include a musical cue, others will be video-based and some will be delieved by the "Clue Crew", a group of four presenters who travel the globe and give demonstrations or point out sights that help players with their answers.

The second round, Double Jeopardy, the catagories are changed, monetary worth of questions double from the first round, there are two Daily Doubles, and the contestant with the least amount of money makes the first selection. If anyone finishes this round with no money, they're automatically eliminated from the contest.

In the third and final round, Final Jeopardy, the contestants are given the subject of the final question without the clue. They're asked to wager a sum they feel comfortable staking on their general knowledge of the subject. A commercial break is taken to ensure the contestants have partitions between them so they cannot inferr an answer from each other. When the show returns from commercial, Alex reads the answer, and the contestants are required to write the question on their electronic tablet. If a person answers correctly, the amount they wagered is added to their total; if they wager incorrectly, it is subtracted. The person with highest amount of money by the end of the round wins, and gets to come back the following day to play again; if everyone ends up with no money, then a new panel of guests plays the next day. Sometimes a returning player can last for quite a long time; the record holder for most Jeopardy appearences at this moment is Ken Jennings, who appeared in a total of 75 games and ultimately won $75,000 on the show - $75,000 being the highest total the show will pay out, anything over that going to the contestant's favorite charity.

The show has several theme tourneys per year, including the annual "Tournament of Champions" which features five-time winning champions and those who've won large sums of money playing on the show, the "College Championship", which takes place at various universities and features college students playing in a two week long tourney, and "Celebrity Jeopardy", an annual week-long tournament featuring politicans and celebrities playing for their designated charity.

The show has had two spin-offs, including "Rock and Roll Celebrity Jeopardy" and "Jep!" a tournament for children.

Fun Fact: The show's theme music and famous "Think Music," played under Final Jeopardy, were composed by the show's creator, Merv Griffin.
