"Isobel" was the second single released from Bjork's second solo album "Post". The origin of the song lies in Bjork's childhood: "Isobel" is a character invented by Bjork and her friends. The song goes on to explain the origins of the mighty girl - born in a forest, a city is built around her. She goes wild in this new steel wilderness, but only manages to fall in love with those who cause her pain. She responds by isolating herself. The "Isobel" character resurfaces in "Bachelorette", Where, in Bjork's words: "So Isobel decides to return to the city and to take a train, like in the 30's, in South America somewhere. She decides to confront love with love and confronts the cowards that don't have the guts to fall in love with love." In the end, in the "Bachelorette" video, Isobel returns to the woods, alone. Björk, Nellee Hooper and Marius De Vries co-wrote the song with Icelandic poet Sjon, and the surrealistic music video, in black and white and filled with water themology, was directed by Michel Gondry. While it wasn't a great chart success, like many of Bjork's songs it was remixed by multiple DJs. Bjork on the Song: "So she escaped and isolated herself. That's why she's called Isobel and not Isabel." "This is the story of Isobel; she was born in a forst by a spark, and as she grew up, she realized that the pebbles on the foret floor were actually skyscrapers. And by the time she was a grown-up woman and the skyscrapers had taken over the forest. She found herself in a city, and she didn't like all the people there so much, because they were a bit too clever for her." -both quotes bjork.com Fun Fact: The lyric "Moth delivers a message/unexplained on your collar" is a repeated theme in both Bachelorette and Isobel, inspired by a real event in Bjork's life. The moth stayed with Bjork all day, even when she removed her shirt to take a swim. Lyrics
