Ice Cream Sandwiches are a dessert or snack treat, comprised of two wafer cookies with a layer of ice cream sandwiched between the, The history of the ice cream sandwich can be traced to Renaissance-era English trifles and 18th century Charlottes, rich compositions of sweet cream and biscuits. Advances in freezer technology made ice cream available to many Europeans and Americans by the 18th century. Victorian-era cooks/chefs crafted fancy ice cream (molded ice creams with or without cake). They also specialized in cream-filled Victorias sandwich cakes. Yet no one can trace a place of origin for the ice cream sandwich. The treat was popularized, if not originated, in America in the late 1890's in New York (Brooklyn to be specific), and eventually spread to San Francisco, where the treat's familiar chocolate layers were replaced with oatmeal cookies. The Anderson ice cream sandwich making machine was registered with the government February 1, 1926 registration number 0615682. The USPTO record does not indicate whether or not this particular device was made/manufactured or ever produced its intended product. The popularity of the treat in the 1920's led to nationwide manufaturing of the treat, where such popular novelty makers as Hood and Klondike mass-manufacture ice cream sandwiches. The treat has gone on to gain intentational popularity - In Australia, it's called "Giant Sandwich Monster" or "Monaco Bar" - in Ireland and Scotland, it's called a "Slider" (Scotland has added the inovation of the "nougot slider", adding a sliver of nougot between the layers of ice cream). In Singapore, it's called Wafer Ice Cream. In all areas, wafer types and ice cream flavors vary to match local favorites. -foodtimeline.org
