A Girl Scout cookie is one of several varieties of cookie sold on neighborhood tours by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) as a fundraiser for their organization. Members of the GSUSA have been selling cookies since 1917 to raise funds for their units. Top-selling girls can earn prizes for their efforts. There are also unit incentives if the unit as a whole does well.

The first bakery-licensed Girl Scout Cookies were made in 1936.

Varieties: The following are all of the varieties sold by GSUSA in various parts of the country; the only varieties sold nationwide are Thin Mints, DoSiDos/Peanut Butter Sandwhiches, and Trefoils/Shortbreads:

Thin Mints: Perhaps the best known of the cookies, Thin Mints are chocolate wafer cookies dipped in a mint-flavored chocolate coating.

Do-Si-Dos/Gauchos/Peanut Butter Sandwiches/Savannahs: An oatmeal sandwich cookie filled with peanut butter, Gauchos became Peanut Butter Sandwiches in the 1990s'; in the south, they were re-named Savannahs in the mid-1990's, then in some markets they were re-named Do-Si-Dos. Depending where you live, you could buy the same cookie under either he Do-Si-Dos, Peanut Butter Sandwich or Savannah label.

Trefoils/Shortbreads: A simple butter cookie stamped in the GSUSA logo.

Tagalongs/Hoedowns/Peanut Butter Patties: Shortbread cookies topped with peanut butter and covered in chocolate.

Samoas/Caramel deLites: Shortbread cookies covered in caramel, sprinkled with toasted coconut, then dunked in chocolate on the bottom and lined with chocolate on the top.

All Abouts/Thanks a Lots: A Shortbread cookie with chocolate on the bottom; various Girl Scout sayings are stamped on top. If "Thanks a Lots", they're Shortbread cookies with fudge on the bottom and stamped with the word "Thank You" in English, French, Chinese, Swahili, or Spanish.

Lemon Chalet Cremes (Lemonades): Shortbread cookies with lemon icing. Lemonades are currently the most popular flavor offered for sale.

Cinna-spins: Cinnamon-flavored cookies shaped like mini cinnamon rolls; shaped like miniature cinnamon rolls.

Sugar Free Chocolate Chip: As listed.

Retired Girl Scout Cookies:

The following cookies have been retired:

Lemon Pastry Cremes
Little Brownies: the first sugar-free Girl Scout Cookie, they resemble small pieces of chocolate brownie and contain real chocolate chips
Cafe Cookies: shortbread cookies coated in cinnamon sugar.
