A B O U T

Porcelain dolls are just what they claim to be; dolls made out of the material porcelain.

The keeping of china/porcelain dolls began in the late 1800's and gained popularity in the victorian era. They were mostly given as keepsakes for children. As children began to play more roughly and the Depression set in, play dolls were made of celluloid and plastic.

When World War I took place, children were forced to stop playing with china dolls entirely - the most popular production firms were German, and thus were prevented from being imported.

By the 1950's, porcelain dolls were seen as collectors items for adults, more than play things for children. Dolls were put into production especially for the adult collector. And thus collecting continues to this day - porcelain dolls are definitively seen as artistic statements, decorative items or adult collectibles

Fun Fact: The hinamatsuri festival in China is a day dedicated to girls - their dolls are put on ceremonial display, and many dolls are burned in sacrifice at temples.
