A B O U T

Comedy Central began its existance as "The Comedy Channel" in 1989. Initially mostly comprised of stand up comedy specials, the network had its first break-out hit with the cult favorite "Mystery Science Theatre 3000", a launch program for the network, which ran from 1989 to 1997. It had early competiton in the "Ha" network, which it merged with in 1991. Other early hits included "Politically Incorrect", a political roundtable hosed by comedian Bill Maher which began in 1993, and "The Daily Show" which took a saterial look at worldwide headlines and the nightly news and began airing in 1996.

The network climbed to national attention when the outrageous animated program "South Park" became a huge hit in 1997. Despite cancelling its once-flagship show, "MST3K", word of mouth about South Park caused a huge gain in subscription requests.

Even though there existed criticsm for its bold content, Comedy Central remains a popular network, airing a combination of televised reruns (MadTV), movies (edited and unedited), specials (their annual Roast series), original television shows (The Sarah Silverman Program, Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report) and animated programming (South Park, Drawn Together, Little Bush), reality shows (Kenny Vs Spenny), game shows (The Gong Show), and what launched the network originally - lots of stand up specials.
