"Caroline In The City" ran from September 21, 1995, to May 11, 1999 on NBC. It then went into syndication and had a long run on Lifetime Televison. Premise: Perky Caroline Duffy, the titular "Caroline", is a cartoonist living in Manhattan, NY. She is the creator of a popular comic strip that reflects her dating woes and life as a transplant from rural Wisconsin. Initially, Caroline is presented as an engaged woman, ready to marry Del, who works for his father's greeting card company (which produced CITC-related merchandising). The two of them end up splitting up by the end of the first season. By then, Caroline's romantic attentions were being directed toward Richard Karinsky, who aspired toward a life as a painter and has taken a job coloring strips for her to make ends meet. By the end of the first season, Richard was smitten with Caroline, too. Afraid that he would lose his chance to be with her, he wrote her an urgent note requesting she meet him at their hangout, the local Italian bistro Remos. She shows up and he kisses her, but he can't explain himself, and he rushed off to Paris to avoid dealing with watching Caroline marry Del. That note didn't end up in Caroline's hands for nearly a full year, though everyone else (including Annie, Caroline's best friend and nextdoor neighbor, and a singer who turned it into the song "Meet Me at Remos") made some use of it. Richard ended up back in New York, unable to sell the requisite number of paintings to make ends meet and was tortured as he watched an oblivious Caroline date others and become serious with vetrinarian Joe. Richard responded by becoming entangled in a relationship with his "Sincere Amore", the first love of his life, the spoiled Itallian hieris Julia. She made him a sensation thanks to her influence and connections. Caroline, meanwhile, experienced a floundering relationship with nice-guy businessman and German Sheppard owner Trevor. By the end of season three, Caroline figured out her feelings for Richard were legitimate, but Julia erased an impassioned message left by Caroline on Richard's answering machine. Caroline rushed off to Spain to stop the wedding, only to discover Richard had married Julia. A love triangle developed between the three combatants, culminating in Richard and Caroline finally getting together in the fourth season - at the same time Del and Annie also figured out they were - if not in love - at least in lust with one another. In the fourth season there was also a change of scenery - instead of mostly working in Caroline's loft, Richard and Caroline move into the office of Eagle Greetings, a new company Del has started up to break free of his father. Most of the season foccused on Caroline and Richard getting closer to each other and adjusting to their serious relationship. In the final episode of the show (which was cancelled in its fourth season), Richard and Caroline are engaged but break up over her desire to reproduce (and his reluctance to do so). Richard finds out that Julia had secretly given birth to his son a few months earlier and flies to Italy to see him; a despondant Caroline becomes closer and closer to Randy, a school friend of hers looking to move back to Wisconsin, to whom she had become attracted over the last few episodes. Randy and Caroline date, and he proposes. Richard figures out that Julia is an unfit mother and she ends up giving his son to him - in Paris Richard meets up with Charlie, who ends up shoving him back toward a union with Caroline. In the final scene an unsure Caroline heads to the altar to marry Randy - and just when she's about to say her "I Do's," Richard shows up with his son and we hear a baby cry as Caroline looks up... Characters: Caroline Duffy: Our protagonist - cheerful, a bit of a goody-two-shoes. Deep down she wants an old-fashioned romance but is unable to find it in New York. Richard Karinsky: Caroline's colorist and eventual love interest. Has grand dreams of becoming a major "serious" artist and has a snide attitude about Caroline's cheer and his nine-to-five job. Del Cassidy: Caroline's one-time fiance and boyfriend, he's the marketing whiz behind the "Caroline In The City" merchandising phenomena. Del has a tendancy to challenge Caroline's values by applying her strip to the strangest marketing concepts (such as a Caroline breakfast cereal and a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade). After working for his father for the first three seasons of the show, Del opens Eagle Greetings, promoting the Caroline strip as his only brand. At the tail end of the show, he finally finds love with Caroline's friend, Annie. Annie Spadaro: Promiscuous and sarcastic best friend of Caroline, Annie lives right across the hall and butts into her business. Annie has a minor role dancing in "Cats" and dreams of one day nailing down the lead. She has an Italian mama who became a reccuring character on the show, especially after Del and Annie became an item. She and Richard sparr constantly. Charlie: roller-skating and out-there friend of Del's, who works for Caroline as a bit of an errand boy. Charlie dissapears during the premise change in season four, but reappears in the series finale. Julia: Richard's wife for season three, Julia is a woman with influential ties who finally gets Richard noticed in the art world. Manipulitive and selfish, Richard eventually breaks up with her when she starts openly cheating on him. Joe: Caroline's season two boyfriend, a vetrinarian. Breaks up with Caroline after cheating on her Trevor: Caroline's season three boyfriend, a businessman with a dog and a kind heart. Leaves Caroline after he realizes she'll always love Richard more than him. Randy: Caroline's attraction in season four; a pediatrician with rugged looks and is good-humored Wisconsinite. They meet when he buys her parent's house after they move out of Wisconsin; he sells to her and rents the house. They become attracted to each other and date; he tempts Caroline into marrying him and moving back to Wisconsin; she nearly does so... Angie Spadaro: Annie's busybody mom. Salty: Caroline's white persian cat; hates Richard. Shelly: Richard's gothic art school girlfriend from season 1. Julio: Richard's son with Julia. -with help from sincereamore.com and wikipedia.com
