"Boys For Pele" was released in January 22nd of 1997 in the UK (It was released the following day in the US). All of the Boys For Pele album tracks were written by Tori, and for the first time, Tori produced the album herself. The tracks were recorded by Mark Hawley and Marcel Van Limbeek. Another addition to this album was Tori's use of some new keyboard varieties: a harpsichord, a harmonium organ, and a clavichord. Boys For Pele also included church bells, horns, strings, a gospel choir and bagpipes. Steve Caton handled the guitars and would join Tori on the road for the Dew Drop Inn '96 Tour. Principal recording was done in a church in County Wicklow, Ireland; a rented house in County Cork, Ireland; with the remainder in New Orleans, LA USA. Future pressings of Boys For Pele would replace the original version of Talula with Talula (The Tornado Mix), remixed for the motion picture "Twister". It charted at #1 in the UK and #2 in the US on the Billboard Album Sales Charts.

This album marked the beginning of Tori's evotion toward mainstream success, and shows her flirting with stardom as a dance club sensation.

SINGLES: In The US, Caught a Lite Sneeze, Talula, Professional Widow, Hey Jupiter and In The Springtime of his Voodoo were released as singles; the first four were also released with different bee sides in the UK; Three B-Sides were released as a single in France; Caught a Lite Sneeze was the international lead-off single, with Talula and Professional Widow were released in Australia and France, respectively

TORI AND REMIXES: The dance remix of Professional Widow was an unexpected club hit and propelled Tori toward a new kind of fame. Her label would try to remake her into a dance club artist and began releasing mixes of her songs for club play, beginning with "Professional Widow" and ending with "From The Choirgirl Hotel's" "Jackie's Strength".

VIDEOS:: Caught a Lite Sneeze, Talula, Hey Jupiter and Professional Widow all had video releases. Professional Widow was a clip compilation of Tori's other videos.

TORI ON THE ALBUM:

Amos describes the album as "a descent," and the first track,"Horses," hints at this metaphor. Says Amos, "It's as if the horses have come to take us back, to descend, to find the dark side. By dark I mean what's hidden, not necessarily satanic." Most of "Boys for Pele" was written on her last tour, "not because I didn't have anything better to do," she says, "but because of what was going on in my personal life." "I was separated from my soul mate. Just feeling that shock when half of you walks out-the songs just started coming to me." "This time I didn't have anyone looking over my shoulder. When I don't have to answer to anybody, I feel I'm more ruthless. When I was doing the sound check, I would play songs that would be more passionate than what we were playing on the night. I'd be hesitant, but my live guys would say to me, 'Just do it.' The songs that started the shows begain to dictate the sound." -- Tori, Billboard Article, 01/13/96

Amos's 1996 album, Boys for Pele, doesn't spend much time on her stereo. "I was really in a bad way. I was finding out what I believed in. What was my ideology? What was the woman I wanted to be? What was sexy to me? What was exciting? I was breaking away from a lot of things and people, and they were breaking away from me as well.
