A B O U T

Bitch is a nonprofit, independent, quarterly magazine published in Oakland, California that bills itself as a "Feminist response to pop culture". Articles offer a feminist perspective on current political events; reviews of television shows, movies, books, and art from a feminist perspective; and interviews with all people from all walks of life. In contrast with conventional women's magazines such as Self, Vogue, or Marie Claire, Bitch explores gender issues in greater depth and from an unconventional viewpoint.

The first issue of Bitch was published in January 1996. The founding editors, Lisa Jervis and Andi Zeisler, wanted to create a public forum in which to air thoughts and theories on women, gender, and feminist issues and how they are treated in the media.

Bitch recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, and have published, in August 2006, a Bitch anthology, Bitchfest: Ten Years of Cultural Criticism from the Pages of Bitch Magazine. Edited by Bitch founders Jervis and Zeisler, Bitchfest includes essays, rants, and raves, along with new pieces written especially for the anthology.
