Bret and Shawn met in 1986, when The Rockers jumped ship from the AWA to work for the WWF. As rivals in the Hart Foundation/Rockers feud, the twosome always managed to put on entertainig matches; when both were groomed for singles stardom, it was natural that they would eventually clash. Their first "official" singles matches took place in 1992, when Hart was the Intercontimental Champion. Together they put on the first series of ladder matches ever exhibitioned in the United States; Hart claims credit for inventing them, as does Michaels. In 1995, after Michaels had experienced an Intercontinental Title Reign of his own and Hart had been World Champion twice, they were placed back into each other's orbits. Michaels seconded Diesel in the later's feud with Bret, leading to Hart's third championship reign in 1995. The two then wrestled in their legendary Iron Man Match in 1996's WrestleMania XII, which led to Michaels' first World Title Reign. Michaels subsequently refused to drop the belt back to Bret, and Hart responded by mocking Michaels for "losing his smile" in a shoot promo at WrestleMania 13. Michaels had claimed this is the root of his hatred for Hart. Michaels went on to pose for "Playgirl", which Hart mocked him for, impugning his sexual prefference. Shawn responded by suggesting Bret had been having some "Sunny Days" recently; a shoot comment insinuating Bret was having an extramarital affair with WWF Diva Sunny. Hart claims in his autobiography that this is the root of his hatred for Michaels. The result was a real-life locker room altercation in which these talented, intelligent men had a hair-pulling schoolroom brawl. Michaels threatened to leave the WWF for WCW, where his friends Kevin Nash and Scott Hall had recently gone; Hart meanwhile re-weighed an offer sent to him by WCW. Things escalated, and Hart chose to bow out, accepting a job with WCW and breaking his 20-year contract with the WWF. It all came to a head at the Montreal Survivor Series: scene of the infameous "screw job" that turned wrestling on its ear. Bret quickly left for a brief career in WCW, where he was used badly; Shawn Michaels, under the "Degeneration X" banner, headlined the WWF for a couple of years before a back injury and Steve Austin's burgeoning popularity pushed him slowly to the side in 1998. A career-ending head injury resulted in a stroke for Hart and permanent retirement; Michaels has since returned, found Christianity, and claimed to hold no ill-will against Hart. However, to this day, Hart holds nothing but contempt for Michaels publically, accusing him in his autobiography of killing the sport he'd worked so hard to promote. Michaels, meanwhile, accuses Hart of taking everything too seriously and living his gimmick. The two men remain estranged. For More Info about.com's profile of the feud.
