Ann-Margret is an actress and singer, perhaps best known for her roles in the movies "Bye-Bye Birdie", "Viva Las Vegas", "Carnal Knowledge", "Newsies", The Grumpy Old Men series and "Tommy". She portrayed "Ann-Margrock" in the Flinstones, and was a well-known singer of standards and an emblem of the swinging 60's.

She was born Ann-Margret Olsson on April 28th, 1941. Her father worked in America during her youth, and Anne and her mother emigrated to the US in November 1946 (she became an American citizen in 1949). After settling in Illinois, Ann began taking dance lessons and devloped a natural affinity for singing and dancing. Her parents enthusiastically supported her interests, and she would appear on variety shows such as Ted Mack's Amateur Hour while still in high school.

Ann graduated and went to Northwestern University, but soon became a member of the singing group "The Suttletones". Through this ensamble, Ann ended up in Los Vegas, where she recieved her big break thanks to George Burns, who witnessed one of her performances. Ann tried out for his annual Christmas show, won a role, and ended up getting positive notices for her soft-shoe routine with Burns.

In 1961 (at nineteen) she sucessfully completed a screen test with 20th Century Fox and was signed to a seven-year contract. She began recording albums for RCA Victor at the same time, with her first album "And Here She Is: Ann Margret" (with its hits "Teach Me Tonight" and "I Just Don't Understand") debuting before her first role, in a UA production of the Bette Davis film "Pocketfull of Miracles". She played "bad girl" "Margy" in the 1962 version of "State Fair", then finally ascended the heights of fame as Kim in "Bye Bye Birdie" in 1963. She was an instant sensation, so much so that she appeared on the cover of Life magazine and ended up performing for President Kennedy at his birthday party.

The following year, she appeared with Elvis Presley in "Viva Las Vegas" and had a brief relationship with the singer (Ironically she also filmed the infameous "Kitten With a Whip" that same year). She appeared as "Ann Margrock" in the Flinstones cartoon series in 1964. In 1966 she made her first USO tour and was fully ensconced as an emblem of the swinging '60's - she also made films such as "The Swinger" and "Made In Paris"; in 1967, she made her debut on the Las Vegas Stage; in 1968 she began a string of successful tv specials.

Initially limited to vixinish roles, Ann worked hard to break free of her "naughty girl" image. Her efforts were rewarded with a role in in 1971's "Carnal Knowledge", which won her an Accadamy Award nomination. The following year, while performing at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, she fell 22 feet from the stage and suffered injuries including a broken left arm, cheekbone and jawbone, that put her out of commission for ten weeks after which she returned to the stage almost back to normal. She appeared in "Tommy" in 1975 and split her time from then on between the bright lights of Las Vegas and the just-as-bright ones in Hollywood. She made many TV movies in the '90's, and she appeared as Madda in "Newsies" and in the Grumpy Old Men Series. She published an autobiography in 1994 and in 2001 did a national tour of the musical "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". Ann continues to work on stage, in music and onscreen.
