A B O U T

"The African Queen" was an Oscar-winning motion picture starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Directed by John Huston, it won Bogart his only Oscar for Best Actor.

Summary: The main plot concearns Rosie Sayer, a British missionary who plies her trade in Africa in 1914 with her brother. They recieve their supplies and news from Canadian captian Charlie Alnut, a coarse and blunt man they treat with stiff politeness. Charlie warns them of a coming German invasion, but Rosie and her brother choose to stay behind.

After Rosie's brother is killed by the Germans, Rosie and Charlie take off on The African Queen, Charlie's leaky and treacherous vessel. Charlie tells Rose that the Germans have a gunboat, the Empress Luisa, which patrols a large lake downriver, effectively blocking any British counterattacks.

Rosie chooses to help the British cause out by turning the Queen into a torpedo boat and sinking the Luisa. The rest of the film follows Rosie and Charlie's hazzardous jouney downriver to the lake and the German gun boat.
