General: The 1950's was a disparate time for the Pop charts. While Bill Haley and the Comets had the first number one rock hit in the history of the world, it was Elvis Presley who made rock music a mainsteam debate for bobbysoxers and their folks. Hundreds of other rock stars broke big - The Crickets and The Everly Brothers made lasting impressions, while rebel acts such as Eddie Cochrane and Johnny Cash began to blur the lines between R&B, Rock and Country. Little Richard, Nat King Cole and the Coasters began to integrate audiences through their hits, and groups such as the Platters and Dion and the Belmonts made Doo-Wop and vocal groups a popular new sound (the Crew-Cuts and The Chordettes pre-faced the rock boom with their hits "Sh-Boom" and "Mr. Sandman"; The Teddy Bears, McGuire Sisters and the Andrews Sisters created the prototype for the Girl Group sound that would sweep through the sixties). The Folk music boom began in 1958 with the Kingston Trio's first number one hit.

Rock music was a cultural revolution for the ages. Much of it was met by severe parental and religeous dissaproval, but the new form of art became unstoppable as Elvis came to dominate the charts at the end of the decade.

Not that big band music gasped its last - Patti Page, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin all had hits during the decade. If anything, the 1950's began to break down the walls between generes and audiences, leading to the melting pot of sounds that today we call pop music.
